Planning Content

  • My contents page will be split into sections.
  • The main pictures used on the contents page will relate to the coverlines used on the front cover.
  • It will include a letter from the editor and a picture of the editor
  • Also it will have a smaller version of the masthead off the front, to signify the logo and the name of the magazine.

Plans for Front Cover

  • My magazine will be called SCHOOL!!
  • I will include one main central image using direct address where the photgraphed person is looking directly at the audience
  • It will include a date, price and issue number
  • The front cover will also include other main coverlines which are an insight into what else is in the magazine
  • It also includes a puff (exclusives, a chance to win something)
  • My main coverline is about one student who achieved 11 A*'s at GCSE

Codes and Conventions of Magazine Contents Page

A magazine contents page is there to help the audience find their desired articles, and show them what else is in the magazine.
  • They all have a list of page numbers and what you can find on them pages.
  • They all have a distinct colour scheme(All use block colours around the graphics)
  • They all have pictures to attract the audience to the article(Normally between 3-7 picutes on a normal contents page).
  • All of them use direct address with their celebrities or people in their stories.
  • All have a structured layout. This includes a smaller version of the masthead from the front cover, the main content, and information on how to subscribe to the magazine through the website.
  • All include their website on the bottom.
  • They have 3-4 different fonts for the headings, sub-headings and general information.
  • It's organised into sections.
  • Includes a letter from the editor(plus a photograph of the editor)
  • They have to have number of page by the photo of the article.
  • Pictures have to relate to the relevant stories.
  • Split into columns
  • Includes photos of other objects, i.e. shoes, food etc.

Magazine Front Cover Analysis - Codes and Conventions

  • All have a large central image - and mostly use direct address, were the celebrity/person in main image, looks directly at the audience.
  • All the gossip magazines have 'exclusives'
  • All have other major stories/coverlines which catch the target audience's eye.
  • All bright and colourful, using bold font and bold colours.
  • Familiar magazines have the titles an pictures overlap each other.
  • They all include a price, bar code and date of issue on the front.
  • Women's Own - Global Magazine, has other countries prices, The rest are national magazines.
  • They all have a distinct colour scheme.
  • All have a masthead.
  • Mainly celebrities in the main central image.
  • All have graphics which are around some of the coverlines.
  • There is usually 3-7 coverlines on a magazine.
  • All have a unique masthead font.
  • Usually have 2-3 different fonts.
  • Gossip magazines tend to have a paparazzi shot as their central image.
  • The biggest coverline should match the central image
