Article Research

  • One main image normally surrounded by text, or parallel with the text.
  • Always a drop capital to start the article off
  • Always a standfirst paragraph, the small paragraph underneath the article masthead to give the reader an insight into what the article is about.
  • There is always the use of a drop quote, which is a memorable quote from the interview with the person shown in the image to show what can be said in the article.
  • All the double page spreads have quotes from either the person who is in the image or the band in the image, or sometimes interviews with people about the subject of the article.
  • Always a distinct colour scheme

Evalutation of School Magazine

In what way does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In my media product i have mainly used forms and conventions of the real media products. I have included a large masthead to stand out the the reader and notify the name of the magazine, which every magazine includes. My front cover includes a main central image, and the feature of that image is using direct address were they are looking directly at the camera, to make the reader feel as though they are looking at them.  I have included the date of issue, and the issue number, which follows conventions of real magazines.  The mise-en-scene of the front cover relates to the main article, which also follows conventions of real media magazines. My front cover also included other coverlines linking to other articles within the magazine. Most magazines have exclusives(chances to win things within the magazine). Finally my media product has included a bar code, which singles out the individual magazine, every magazine has a bar code on the front cover. My contents page has included many conventions of a real media product , the pictures used in the contents are related to the articles down the sides, and they all have the relevant page numbers. I have a smaller masthead but it is the exact same font and colour as the one on the front cover. I have included a letter from the editor, and information on how to get involved with the magazine which definitely follows conventions of real media products.
How Did You Use New Media Technologies In The Construction Of Your Media Product?
In the production of my media product i used many different new technologies. Firstly, I used the Nikon D90 cameras to take my photographs for my front cover and my contentes page. This helped because it took high quality photographs which were clear on the front cover. These cameras were very simple to use and understand. Secondly I used Photoshop, this was for my front cover. This helped me arrange my front cover and make it look realistic and similar to a real media product. Photoshop was quite tricky to use and understand but once I got used to it and knew how to use all of the tools it was reasonably easy to use. Thirdly I used Quark to make my contents page. Quark helped me organise my contents page and was very easy to use and understand once i got to grips with it.
What Are The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Both The Product And Your Use Of New Media Technologies?
My product has followed most of the conventions of real media products, it has a masthead, a main central image, use of direct address, date and number of issue, bar code, other coverlines. In my contents page it has also followed many conventions of the real media product. It has a letter from the editor, a smaller masthead of the logo of the magazine, an offer to subscribe, also a list of other articles in the magazine and the pictures are linked to them articles. Although i did have some strengths, I did have quite a few weaknesses. I forgot to mention the price on the front cover, but it couldve been included in the contents, or back page. I could have picked a specific colour scheme to have for my front cover. Also i should have picked a particular background for my front cover, because then it would have showed i thought about the mise en scene properly. Yes my mise en scene did link in with my article as it was in a school, but that was just improvised and i should have thought more carefully about it. My contents page had far too much white spaces and not enough content on it; this would have helped make it look more realistic. I didn't include a letter from the editor. I didnt really use a column structure which i should have used. The list of page numbers wasn't really split into sections like it should have been.
