Double Page Spread Interview

Did you listen to the original band (Rain) which was without Liam and Noel Gallagher??
Not really they were not a very big band. I was at University at the time and a few of my friends talked about them, I think they were doing some student union stuff but nothing I caught up with.
What was your first experience of oasis and what was your first impressions of the band??A friend called Andy had a few new songs on tape when we went round to his flat for drinks. One of them was an early unpolished version of cigarettes and alcohol. I thought it was great and a real change from others I had heard. A lot of people were in to the roses or charlatans at the time but I found it all a bit similar but this music seemed really me. It was a bit of a bootleg version but very soon they were appearing on the radio and at a few Uni events. I was hooked. I had always been more of a band and good instrument type music guy. The eighties as a kid I was more Queen, U2 and Dire Straights than the Stock Aitkin and Waterman mob so when Oasis came along it was an instant attraction for me.
Well I’m pretty sure it was aimed at the youth to early twenties market. Around the time a lot of marketing was done towards the university and hitting the likes of Radio 1 evening sessions. Early songs like C&A and Digsy’s Diner were not exactly songs that older people would instantly like but as I have grown older I like them even more. But without doubt they defiantly went for that market.Which Oasis single did you first buy??well….as someone that would not exactly buy so to speak I tended to acquire them I never bought a single but Defiantly Maybe was a CD I went out of my way to buy. Infact due to various reasons of losing them I have actually bought it 3 times!!
Where was your first Oasis gig, and what did you think of the whole event??
Well the first time I ever watch Oasis live was at Bury Town hall in a bit of a North of England Uni type event where they sang three songs. The first real gig so to speak I watched them at was at Maine Road on their What’s the Story tour. A massive gig for the Gallagher brothers due to them both supporting Man City and actually growing up 5 minutes away. I went on to watch them at a massive gig at Knebworth and then at the Echo Arena in later years. The Maine Road gig was totally and utually amazing when Oasis were really on top of the world. They had Defiantly Maybe, What’s the Story albums and the Whatever ep to fall back on and my god every single song was a classic. The first time I had heard don’t look back in anger live and what a gig classic. I will go as far as to say the best live song ever written.Knebworth was not quite as good due to how big it was 150,000 watched that gig. But the Echo a few years ago again was brilliant. I was an older guy and loved every single minute of it.
Did you ever suspect the massive fall out which happened??
Yes in a word. They are brothers who have never actually seen eye to eye. I think in the early days both of their drives for success and fame overrided the fact that they used to fall out. They always found a way to make up. The older more successful and richer they got the less they felt they needed each other. It was always going to happen. As a massive fan I just hope that time apart will help and one day they will heal any issues and give us the magic again. Noel or Liam??Its changed!!! as a younger guy without a doubt it was Liam, his swagger, his attitude the brilliant voice it was just what I looked at and loved. As I have got older its Noel. The song writing genius that has described my life makes me feel overwhelmed. He writes from his experience and I can feel every song like its about me. I grew up with these guys and as I have I have loved them both. What did you think of rival bands at the time I.e. BlurIm ashamed to say back in the day I got caught up in the media hype that pitched Blur v Oasis. You just could not be a fan of both at the time. You were either one or the other and it made for one hell of a great fight. The British music industry had not seen anything like it in years but what a blast it was. As I have grown up I realise it was just hype and to be honest Blur were brilliant. Listening to some of there songs makes me really see how good they were. All I can say is in a time when you get some right rubbish at number 1 now I am so grateful for the excellent few years of Oasis and Britpop I had as a younger man and weekly classic songs we had to hear.
Do you think a comeback for the 20th anniversary of What’s the Story Morning Glory in 2015 will work??

God I hope so… What a blast that would be. We have had some practises lately with Take That and now the Roses so I would love it to happen. As my 16 year old son has become in the last year a big fan of Oasis to it would be the best thing I could ever think of to be able to go and watch it with him. A real dream come true. Could it work?? Haha ask Liam and Noel…. Anything could happen, that’s why they are Oasis.Favourite and least favourite Oasis song??Worst is Songbird. A pile of poo and you can tell its written by Liam. Its something an A Level student would produce its utter shit.
My Favourite is Whatever. Some of it is personal reasons to do with the time but after DM a few in the press said yes, yes their alright but can Noel only write a rock song then he comes out with that written perfectly and incorporating a symphony orchestra. McCartney came out with an orchestra album years later and was called a genius. Fair enough he is but so is Noel.

Do you think the band started to go downhill after the departure of band member ‘bonehead’??
No I think the band began to struggle just before when as I have already said the fighting began to outweigh the benefits to the two lads themselves. Bonehead leaving was because I think he began to sense that happening. I remember listening to him on Radio 1 in an interview about 4 months after he left saying the same. He said they always made up for the gigs for the music but then it happened. They went on stage still pissed at each other and it effected the gig. He said he knew then. He tried until the end of that tour but that was that. Bonehead going for me personally I knew the end would not be far away after that.
Birds.. Seem alright from what I have heard the song writing will be just as good but I just fear the frailties in Noels singing will mean he cant always write what he wants to write. I know Noel sings some classics in Oasis but there was no way he could sing some. I just hope he does not hold back his writing to protect the fact his voice is not as good as Liam’s.

Your thoughts on ‘Beady Eye’ and ‘High Flying Birds’??
Beady eye.. If im honest not a fan. But to be honest as much as I adored Liam as a singer and a man never liked his songs as you can see from my worst song.
??

When you first listened to the band, who did you think that the music was aimed for??
